The First of Many
Hi,
The opening to writing anything is kinda the hardest for me, so I'm pouring this first line out just how it comes.
However, I'll start with the cliche, I hope this finds you well?. I really do.
This is the first of my many letters to you and in this one I decided to highlight a couple of things, mostly bordering around:
- Why I'm writing these to you
- Who is this addressed to
- What to expect in these letters
- How frequent will these be
I'll start with why.
Why this letter
It's simple, I've always enjoyed speaking to people, more so, sharing knowledge, information, and value. These letters will do just that. I decided to keep them as letters because of the personal feel informal letters bring, and this is my love letter to you.
These letters will be in my own words and I don't expect it to be perfect.
While I've had a harder time writing recently because of work, I hope these letters motivate me to write and share more.
Who is this for
I'd built this to share my experience with anyone who is just starting out. Now you would wonder, starting out with what? At any point in life, I realized we are all beginners at different things. Could be riding a bike, baking, learning JavaScript, flying a plane, learning a new language, or something deemed as simple as washing your hands.
I'd like to resonate with anyone keen on learning something new or just having fun learning stuff. Could be a new engineering tool, a hobby I'm sharing or you're switching careers and would like to learn something new (I think I've switched a billion careers already).
With this, I'd keep my letters to you very simple, fun, and straight to the point. Hell yeah! Expect some cheeky cat jokes too :)
What I'll share
I'll share and document everything I have learned so far with you. These include all my professional and personal experiences ranging from topics on:
- Software engineering
- Developer relations, advocacy, and public speaking
- Product/Project Management
- Stock trading and investing
- Writing and teaching
- Chemical engineering (If I can still reminder thermodynamics 😉)
- Basketball
- Travel, cultures, and people
- Football (most recently)
... and any other skill or knowledge I acquire on my journey.
I'll try to keep these letters to you, short and concise. When sharing a longer piece, maybe an article or a tutorial, I'll provide a summary beforehand so you get the gist early on.
I'll keep these outcome-oriented, therefore, each letter would be purpose-driven and I hope the purpose is clear as the air half of my bag of chips!
How frequent will these be
These letters will be written to you weekly. This is a commitment and I intend to keep it. However, I could share anything interesting at any time once it comes, just vibes.
If you subscribe to receive my letters using this link. I'll send it directly to your inbox. No pressure, but I hope you do want to receive them.
If you have any comments, feedback or questions, you can reach me via Twitter
With these, I'd draw the curtain today, till my next letter to you.
I hope you stay safe, wash your hands, and still try to live a little.
Here's to becoming better 🍷.
William.
