CHALLENGE

  • OpenRouter was building its organic content channel from scratch, with Hackmamba-authored articles starting at zero.
  • OpenRouter already had an internal content agent that handled topic research, briefs, and first drafts.
  • An early review showed that some product information in those drafts had fallen behind the live product.
  • One draft listed OpenRouter at 2.5 million users when the verified figure had already passed 5 million, while another referenced a 5% markup that OpenRouter no longer charged.
  • Three of the five drafts we reviewed stated that OpenRouter lacked SOC 2 even though the company held a Type 2 report.
  • Technical tutorials also needed writers to verify API behavior, run the code, and check details such as pricing, model parameters, context limits, and endpoints.
  • OpenRouter needed a production process that could handle that work before articles reached its team for final product review.

Finding time to actually create it in a way that isn’t pure AI-slop. AI works great for scale but still has major quality issues- Kenny Rogers, DevRel Lead, OpenRouter

SOLUTION

  • Hackmamba plugged into OpenRouter’s existing workflow, with their internal content agent continuing to handle research, briefs, and first drafts.
  • A team of eight writers developed those drafts, verified product claims against OpenRouter’s live model pages and documentation, and checked provider documentation where needed.
  • Writers ran the workflows covered in technical tutorials, including commands, code samples, integrations, and API tests.
  • Each article included a review guide that recorded the claims checked, sources used, corrections made, and questions that still required OpenRouter’s input.
  • Two Boki review agents checked code, API parameters, product claims, sources, structure, and product context before a human reviewer completed the final Hackmamba review.
  • We organized production into monthly batches so writing, internal review, and OpenRouter approval could happen at the same time.
  • OpenRouter continued to choose the topics, while Hackmamba checked search demand, keyword difficulty, and overlap with existing content before drafting.
  • As articles went live, we used query-level search data, CTR, engagement time, and AI-assistant referrals to refine how future briefs were approached.

RESULTS

  • Thirty-nine active articles generated 49,139 organic clicks and 4.36 million search impressions in three months.
  • Four practical guides generated 34,390 clicks, accounting for about 70% of organic clicks across the measured articles.
  • Twenty-two tutorials recorded an average CTR of 1.34%, while seventeen explainers recorded 0.60% at a similar average search position near six.
  • The Zero Data Retention article generated 164 clicks in 10 days and ranked between positions two and four for searches related to “OpenRouter ZDR.”
  • The team-spend article ranked #1 for “OpenRouter BAA,” while the image-generation article recorded a 66.7% CTR for the exact query no endpoints found that support image input.
  • Forty articles received 6,025 visits from AI assistants between June 20 and September 19.
  • ChatGPT sent 4,457 visits, followed by Gemini with 941, Claude with 315, Perplexity with 290, and Copilot with 21.
  • AI-assistant traffic to OpenRouter’s blog grew from about 165 visits per month before the articles began publishing to 2,391 in July and 3,725 in August.
  • Hackmamba-produced articles accounted for 70% of AI-assistant traffic in July and 62% in August.

As we at OpenRouter have recently been putting more effort into growing our blog, Hackmamba has been instrumental in helping us to not only create the content needed to do so, but in developing and adjusting our strategy based on the results we are actually seeing. Hackmamba has also been extremely proactive in helping us to make sure that the content being created is not being done for its own sake but that it is actually achieving the results we are looking for. We’ve added tens of thousands of clicks and millions of impressions to our blog in the few months we’ve been working with them, and that number continues to grow. - Kenny Rogers, DevRel Lead, OpenRouter
